HeatShield Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap & Crown in Astoria: What to Know First

HeatShield chimney cap and crown work in Astoria runs $340 to $680 for a standard replacement, depending on flue count and the condition of the chase beneath it. Wendell and his crew handle HeatShield cap installation, crown repair, crown coating, and multi-flue setups for rowhouses and apartment buildings throughout Astoria, and most jobs are booked within a week of the initial call. The number you hear on the phone is the number on the invoice. If you own a HeatShield system and your cap is rusted through or your crown is crackling, call (929) 822-6306 and we’ll walk you through what you’re looking at before anyone climbs a ladder.

How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

HeatShield builds a solid liner system, but the cap and crown sit out in the weather and take the beating. Here’s what we actually see on Astoria rooftops, not what the brochure shows you.

  • HeatShield stainless caps with galvanized bases - The cap itself holds up, but the base plate on some older HeatShield cap models was galvanized, not stainless. Galvanized steel in a coastal climate like Astoria lasts maybe five or six years before the zinc layer burns off and rust starts creeping. We replace the whole cap with full stainless, not just the lid. The lid isn’t the weak point.
  • Crown cracking around the flue opening - HeatShield liners expand and contract with every fire and every off-season freeze-thaw cycle. If the original crown was poured without an expansion gap around the flue, the liner’s movement slowly cracks the crown outward from the center. You’ll see hairline cracks first, then chunks spalling off. We recast the crown with the proper gap and a CrownCoat membrane so it has room to move without tearing itself apart.
  • Hood-to-mesh separation on multi-flue caps - HeatShield multi-flue caps take a lot of wind pressure up on Astoria rooftops, especially the three- and four-story walk-ups near the N/W line. The spot-welds between the hood and the mesh screen on some models are the first thing to fatigue. Water gets in through the gap and runs down the outside of the liner. We reweld and re-rivet the hood, or swap in a heavier cap if the original was undersized for the flue span.
  • Warped damper plates on older HeatShield cap joints - If your HeatShield cap has a damper function and it’s been exposed to a few seasons of direct sun on a black tar roof, the damper plate can warp just enough that it won’t seat fully. That leaves a draft path open all summer and you’ll feel warm air coming down the chimney in July. We straighten or replace the plate and check the pivot hardware while we’re up there.
  • Improperly seated cap after a liner install - This one is common enough that we check for it on every HeatShield service call in Astoria. The original install crew put the liner in, set the cap on top, and never sealed the gap between the cap sleeve and the flue tile. Rain finds that gap. We pull the cap, clean the seat, and re-install with high-temp silicone rated for the HeatShield sleeve diameter. Ten minutes of sealant saves a season of water damage.

Our HeatShield Chimney Cap & Crown Process

Wendell started working on HeatShield systems years ago, back when the brand first showed up in Astoria conversions. He’s been on more of these rooftops within earshot of the N train than he’d care to count. Here’s how a typical cap and crown job runs with us:

  1. 1
You call (929) 822-6306. A live person answers, day or night. You describe what you’re seeing. If it’s a cap that blew off in a storm, we’ll help you figure out if it’s urgent or if it can wait a week.
  2. 2
Wendell or one of his crew shows up in uniform. We climb the roof, photograph everything, and put eyes on the cap, the crown, and the top of the flue liner. You get the camera footage and a plain-English verdict, every time, no exceptions.
  3. 3
We tell you what actually needs doing. If the crown has a hairline crack that can be coated, we’ll say so. If the cap is holding fine and the real problem is a cracked flue tile underneath, we’ll tell you that instead. If it needs doing, we’ll do it. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that first.
  4. 4
Parts decision. For HeatShield cap replacements, we use HeatShield OEM caps or full-stainless aftermarket caps that match the liner’s outside diameter exactly. For crowns, we pour with a cold-weather mix rated for Astoria’s freeze-thaw cycling and add an expansion joint around the flue.
  5. 5
The work, then the test. We install, seal, and then test the draft with a smoke pencil and check the cap from all four sides. You’ll see the finished job in photos before we pack the ladder.
  6. 6
90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Every HeatShield cap or crown job leaves with that promise stamped on the invoice. If it’s not right, one call brings us back.

What HeatShield Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in Astoria

Here’s what HeatShield owners in Astoria should expect to pay. These are the prices Wendell quotes over the phone, and they’re the prices on the invoice.

  • Single-flue HeatShield cap replacement: $340 to $480 for a full stainless cap, installed and sealed.
  • Multi-flue HeatShield cap (custom or standard): $520 to $680 depending on span and wind load requirements for taller rowhouses.
  • Crown repair (crack filling and membrane coating): $260 to $380 if the crown crown material is still sound.
  • Crown recast (full tear-out and re-pour): $500 to $750 for a standard Astoria chimney, higher for multi-flue or walk-up access.

What moves the number is roof access, flue count, and whether the crown needs a patch or a full recast. We don’t charge a trip fee for calls inside our service county, and we’ll give you a $40 break on any repair over $200. Call (929) 822-6306 for a free estimate. The number we give you is the number you pay.

Why Astoria Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for HeatShield Work

We’ve been working Astoria rooftops since 1999. Wendell Pike started Top Hat Chimney the same year, and he still answers the phone on plenty of calls. That’s the point: when you call about a HeatShield cap that’s rusted through above your bedroom, the person on the other end has probably been on your exact block before. We know the pitch of these roofs, the way the wind comes off the East River, and how the salt air behaves on metal. And every HeatShield job we finish is backed by the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the cap leaks or the crown cracks, one call brings us back. No voice mail box, no call center, no runaround.

And if you have a mixed setup, we work with the other brands that show up in these older buildings too: DuraFlex and Gelco liners, Copperfield caps, Olympia and Famco parts. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not a manufacturer rep, so we’ll tell you when an aftermarket part does the job just as well for less money. And when the HeatShield part is the only thing that belongs on there, we’ll say so.
