Gelco makes a solid liner. That’s not the problem. The problem is that Astoria’s weather, decades of oil-to-gas conversions, and some questionable installations over the years have put certain Gelco lines through more than the factory ever expected. Here’s what we actually see when we get up on Astoria rooftops.

• Gelco 316L flexible liner seam separation at the lower joints. This shows up most often in flues serving converted oil-to-gas furnaces. The acidic condensate from high-efficiency gas appliances sits at the bottom elbow, and over eight to ten years the seam welds at those lower joints start to open. We see it as a faint white staining on the exterior of the liner during a camera inspection. The fix is a liner replacement, but we always verify with footage before recommending it, because sometimes it’s just surface oxidation and the liner has years left.
• Gelco 316Ti rigid sections pulling apart at the locking bands. Astoria rowhouses settle. The flue moves with the building, but the liner doesn’t always follow. When the masonry shifts even a quarter inch, the mechanical locking bands on Gelco’s rigid 316Ti sections can slip, especially on taller four and five story flues. You’ll hear a metallic rattle when the wind blows or the boiler kicks on. We resecure the bands where the liner is sound, and only recommend replacement when the sections themselves are deformed or cracked.
• Improperly sized Gelco liners from quick-flip installations. This one isn’t Gelco’s fault. We’ve pulled 6-inch liners out of flues that needed 5.5-inch, or 5-inch liners run through old 8×12 clay tile flues with no insulation wrap. The liner works fine for a few years, then creosote builds in the odd annular space and the draft goes sluggish. A properly sized Gelco liner with the right insulation lasts decades. A wrong one gets replaced. We measure, we don’t guess.
• Gelco liner kinking at the top plate on shallow-pitch Astoria roofs.
