• HeatShield stainless caps with galvanized bases - The cap itself holds up, but the base plate on some older HeatShield cap models was galvanized, not stainless. We replace the whole cap with full stainless, not just the lid. The lid isn’t the weak point.
• Crown cracking around the flue opening - HeatShield liners expand and contract with every fire and every off-season freeze-thaw cycle. If the original crown was poured without an expansion gap around the flue, the liner’s movement slowly cracks the crown outward from the center. You’ll see hairline cracks first, then chunks spalling off. We recast the crown with the proper gap and a CrownCoat membrane so it has room to move without tearing itself apart.
• Hood-to-mesh separation on multi-flue caps - HeatShield multi-flue caps take a lot of wind pressure up on Astoria rooftops, especially the three- and four-story walk-ups near the N/W line.
